20 Feb A Lifeline of Learning: Finding Hope Amidst Hardship
Anu*, a co-mission partner in a city in Nepal, leads an interdenominational Christian non-profit, where she and her team have setup an education center for children living in squatter settlements.
Through her work, Anu met Bala*, a teenager facing extreme frustration with his studies; repeatedly failing annual and board level examinations had become discouraging – an issue faced by numerous children in Nepal.
“For families here, education is often out of reach, overshadowed by economic hardship, illiteracy, or social challenges. Many children in that situation would give up on school entirely. However, Bala held onto a desire to improve despite the tough circumstances faced by his family and others within the community, where dreams of academic success are often wilted due to a lack of foundational support.” shares Anu.
Once he started attending the education center though, Bala found a lifeline of sorts, through regular tuition contributed greatly towards the improvement of his homework and overall marks.
What mattered most was not just the academics; it was the atmosphere.
According to Bala, “The teachers didn’t just help me pass. They made me feel seen, understood, and genuinely encouraged,” he says. In one short year, Bala was able to successfully pass his annual exams and advance to the next grade
Today, Anu says Bala has completely transformed from an insecure student to a confident individual, who can expertly tackle subjects like science and mathematics.
Beyond academics, Bala has also discovered a natural ability within himself to lead and voice his thoughts actively in the classroom and during group activities.
Bala’s story serves as a reminder to Anu and her team that this education center, which started as a simple joint initiative, has now blossomed into a safe space that ensures every child is given the proper guidance that not only enhances their academics but also their lives!
