Gajan*, a co-mission partner based in South-Asia, leads a team at a Christian Leadership Training Center that focuses on residential programs for grassroots leaders. Through a recent course Gajan was overseeing, Gajan was re-acquainted with a pastor who used to be an alumni at his training center.
This interaction led Gajan to hear about a woman named Mary*, who became a believer and a church leader in an unlikely way.
Several years ago, when her husband was serving in the army, Mary and her family were stationed in a region that was deeply rooted in traditions. Surrounded by rituals and the veneration of idols, Mary began to partake in some of these practices in her daily life.
As time went by, Mary’s son found his heart resonating with the teachings of Christianity. Drawn to faith-based media outlets, his curiosity blossomed despite his family’s initial resistance.
A turning point arrived when Mary’s son was unjustly accused of involvement in illegal activities. He was apprehended, subjected to violence, and extorted for money. In that desperate moment, he turned to prayer. Help came unexpectedly when his employer intervened, paying the sum demanded and securing his release. This event sowed a seed of wonder in Mary’s heart regarding the power of prayer and a living God.
This profound experience led Mary to embrace Jesus as her Savior. Later, as the family relocated and settled in their home state, they found a local church. The Pastor recognized Mary’s quiet strength and encouraged her to participate in a month-long women’s leadership training program, an opportunity she embraced wholeheartedly.
During this training, Mary experienced a deep spiritual awakening. Immersed in daily devotions and Bible study, her understanding of worship and prayer deepened, moving beyond ritual to a personal connection with God. Following the training, Mary became an active member of the church, eventually stepping into leadership when the Pastor faced a health crisis.
Today, Mary is a steadfast pillar of the church, actively involved in its various ministries and sharing the love of Christ within her community. Her son’s initial faith became the catalyst for their family’s transformation, and now, Mary’s dedication and service are inspiring positive change in lives around her, demonstrating the powerful ripple effect of faith!
